WOMEN TAKE SILVER AFTER AN OUTSTANDING WEEK OF HOCKEY IN AUCKLAND

The Vantage Black Sticks Women have finished runners-up at the 2026 FIH Women's Nations Cup, falling 2-0 to India in front of a packed North Harbour National Hockey Centre on Sunday night.

India made a fast start, converting two penalty corners in the opening quarter and holding onto their lead despite a determined second-half fightback from the Vantage Black Sticks.

But while the final result didn't go New Zealand's way, it does little to take away from what has been an incredibly special week for the team and the New Zealand hockey community.

For the first time in a decade, the Vantage Black Sticks Women played in a major international final on home soil. Night after night, North Harbour National Hockey Centre was packed with fans wearing black, waving flags, painting faces and creating an atmosphere rarely seen for hockey in New Zealand.

For many of the players, it was a once-in-a-career experience. The opportunity to play in front of family, friends and local hockey fans who have supported them throughout their journeys created memories that will last forever.

The team rewarded that support with outstanding performances throughout the tournament. Wins over Korea, Chile and France saw the Vantage Black Sticks top their pool unbeaten before an unforgettable semi-final victory over the USA. After a tense 1-1 draw, New Zealand prevailed 4-1 in the shootout thanks to a flawless effort from the shooters and a goalkeeping masterclass from Grace O'Hanlon.

The tournament also showcased the exciting future of this group. Riana Pho was recognised as the Young Player of the Tournament, while Grace O'Hanlon was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after another exceptional week between the posts.

While the gold medal slipped away, the Vantage Black Sticks leave Auckland with silver medals, renewed belief and the backing of a hockey community that showed up in force. If this week proved anything, it's that hockey in New Zealand is alive and thriving, and this team has a bright future ahead.

Attention now turns to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, which begins on August 15 in Belgium and the Netherlands.
