THE VANTAE BLACK STICKS WOMEN FINISH 4TH AT CHANGZHOU INVITATIONAL

The Vantage Black Sticks closed out their Changzhou Invitational Tournament campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 loss to China A in the bronze medal match, finishing fourth overall.

Played in great conditions in front of a strong crowd, both teams were eager to finish the tournament on a high and secure a place on the podium. The first half was an even contest, with both sides creating opportunities. China A held a slight edge in attacking moments, but the Vantage Black Sticks had a standout chance through Mezzy Surridge, whose powerful reverse-stick shot from the top of the circle was brilliantly saved by the Chinese goalkeeper. Despite both teams pushing hard, the match remained locked at 0–0 heading into halftime.

Both teams continued to create chances in the third quarter, but China A found the breakthrough with a field goal. The Vantage Black Sticks responded strongly and thought they had equalised through a penalty corner variation, only for the goal to be overturned following a review for dangerous play. China A held a 1–0 lead going into the final quarter.

The Vantage Black Sticks lifted their intensity in the last 15 minutes, applying sustained pressure and creating multiple attacking opportunities in search of an equaliser. However, China A’s defence held firm under pressure, denying the late chances and securing the win.

While the result meant a fourth-place finish, the tournament has been an incredibly valuable experience for the Vantage Black Sticks. Competing against top-level opposition, including multiple matches against Argentina and strong performances from China A, has provided important exposure to tier-one international hockey and key development opportunities for the group.

The Vantage Black Sticks extend their thanks to Jiangsu Province and China Hockey for hosting the Changzhou Invitational Tournament and providing the opportunity to compete in a high-quality international environment. The experience gained will be vital as the team continues to build towards upcoming a home Nations Cup in June.
