OPENING VICTORY FOR WOMEN IN FRONT OF HOME CORWD

The 2026 Women’s FIH Nations Cup is officially underway, and what a performance to start from the Vantage Black Sticks Women last night.

A packed crowd filled the stands at North Harbour National Hockey Centre as the reigning champions took to the field against Korea in the opening match of the tournament. The hockey community turned out in force, with flags waving, faces painted, and chants echoing around the stadium as excitement built for the first game of the campaign.

Before the first whistle, the teams were welcomed onto the field by the Westlake Girls Kapa Haka group in a powerful display of culture and pride that set the tone for a special evening of hockey.

As expected, the match began as a fierce arm wrestle. Both teams were desperate to start their Nations Cup campaigns strongly, trading possession and testing each other's defence in the opening exchanges. Gradually, the Vantage Black Sticks began to assert themselves, gaining more territory and creating better opportunities inside the circle.

The breakthrough came in the first quarter through a perfectly executed penalty corner. Kaitlin Cotter stepped up and delivered a powerful flick into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into celebration and giving the Vantage Black Sticks an early 1–0 lead.

The second quarter continued in much the same fashion, with both teams competing fiercely across the field. Korea looked dangerous at times, but New Zealand's defence stood strong, and the Vantage Black Sticks carried their slender advantage into halftime.

Korea found an equaliser in the third quarter through a penalty corner that squeezed past goalkeeper Grace O'Hanlon and the post defender, levelling the match at 1–1.

But the response from the Vantage Black Sticks was immediate.

Hannah Gravenall restored the lead with a brilliant deflection from another Kaitlin Cotter penalty corner delivery, reigniting the atmosphere at North Harbour.

Then, just a minute later, the Vantage Black Sticks produced a lightning-fast counterattack starting deep in their own half that swept the length of the field before Hannah Cotter threw herself at the ball inside the circle, diving to guide it into the goal and cap off a spectacular team effort.

The goal extended the lead to 3–1, and that scoreline would remain until full time as the Vantage Black Sticks secured an impressive opening victory to begin their Nations Cup title defence.

It was also a night to remember for Ruby Baker, who made her international debut in the black shirt. Speaking after the match, an emotional Baker reflected on the occasion.

"It's genuinely a dream come true. It's so special to get a win on debut and play with these girls. The black shirt is an honour to wear and to play at home in front of family and friends makes the day even more special. Literally, this has been my dream since I was a little girl."

The celebrations didn't stop at the final whistle, with players spending time signing sticks and posters, taking photos, and connecting with fans around the stadium. A reminder of the special bond between this team and the hockey community.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women are back in action tonight as they take on Chile at 6:00pm at North Harbour National Hockey Centre. Get down and support the girls as they chase a second straight victory.

But that’s not all… It will be a huge evening of hockey for New Zealand fans, with the Vantage Black Sticks Men also in action later tonight in Cape Town as they face Malaysia in their third match of the FIH Nations Cup.

That game will be live on TVNZ+ at 10:15pm NZT, giving fans the chance to cheer on both national teams back-to-back.
