JAPAN CONFIRMED IN FOUR-MATCH TEST SERIES IN HAMILTON
Hockey New Zealand can confirm a revised format for the Vantage Black Sticks Men’s Summer of Hockey series in Hamilton following the withdrawal of Malaysia and Korea from the event. Both nations have cited recent World Cup qualifier scheduling and associated logistical challenges as the reason for their withdrawal.
While this change is disappointing, Hockey New Zealand can announce that Japan remains confirmed and the event will now proceed as a four-test-match series between the Vantage Black Sticks and Japan at the Gallagher Hockey Centre (Waikato Hockey). The revised format still provides an excellent opportunity for the Vantage Black Sticks Men to compete against quality international opposition on home soil, while continuing to build momentum toward key international targets, including the 2026 FIH World Cup.
To ensure both teams receive the volume and intensity of match play originally planned, the New Zealand A Men’s squad will assemble alongside the series. NZA will play Japan and the Vantage Black Sticks Men in multiple warm-up matches leading into the official test series. This approach not only supports Japan’s preparation but also provides valuable opportunities to test depth, develop emerging talent, and expose players to international opposition within a high-performance environment.

Despite the revised structure, the Summer of Hockey remains an exciting chance for fans to see the Vantage Black Sticks Men back on home turf, competing against a strong Japanese side and showcasing the depth of New Zealand hockey.
