THE VANTAGE BLACK STICKS MEN HAVE THEIR FIRST-EVER EUROPEAN BASED CAMP
The Vantage Black Sticks Men's team has marked a significant milestone in its journey with the successful completion of its first-ever European-based training camp. This innovative approach follows the team's strategic decentralisation, allowing players to pursue professional hockey contracts across the world while maintaining their commitment to New Zealand's national team.
The camp, held in Hamburg, Germany, brought together 14 players from various European clubs, providing them with an opportunity to reconnect and train under the guidance of Head Coach Greg Nicol and Assistant Coach Shea McAleese. With large amount of players (both men and women) currently competing throughout Europe, UK and Australia, this initiative is a testament to the team's adaptability and resilience in the face of funding challenges.
Two friendly matches were played during the camp, one against Uhlenhorster Hockey-Club and the other against Hamburger Polo Club. These matches were a critical component of the camp, as it was the first time the majority of our European based Black Sticks players had played together since August, 2024.
Assistant Coach Shea McAleese reflected on the camp's atmosphere, stating, "The environment this week has been amazing. The vibe's been unreal, and the connection among the players is something I would have loved during my time as a player."
Head Coach Greg Nicol emphasized the importance of fostering relationships with European clubs, stating, "Connection is the biggest. If we're working well with the clubs and their coaches, then we know that the players are going to get the best service when they're over here."
Captain Nic Woods shared his enthusiasm for the camp, noting, "Being here in Hamburg all together with a group of 15 is awesome. It adds a lot for us, giving a different spice to our national team."
The decentralised model has enabled players to balance their professional aspirations with their commitment to the Black Sticks. This flexibility has allowed players to experience diverse playing styles and cultures, contributing to their personal and professional growth.
As the team prepares for the upcoming Nations Cup in Kuala Lumpur in June, the European camp serves as a crucial checkpoint for player development and selection. The Black Sticks are eager to defend their title, having won the Nations Cup last year in Poland.
The success of this inaugural camp sets a promising precedent for future training sessions in Europe and potentially other parts of the world, as the team continues to adapt and thrive in a decentralised environment. With a focus on connection, competitive play, and personal growth, the Vantage Black Sticks Men's team is poised for a dynamic year ahead.
