100 INTERNATIONAL GOALS FOR KANE RUSSELL IN UNBEATEN RUN
The Vantage Black Sticks Men have finished pool play at the 2026 FIH Nations Cup unbeaten, defeating Japan 5-2 in Cape Town to secure top spot in Pool A and set up a semi-final clash with hosts South Africa.
The match carried plenty of significance. A win or draw would see New Zealand finish top of the pool and avoid a semi-final meeting with France. But all eyes were also on one man, Kane Russell.
Russell entered the match sitting on 99 international goals and wasted little time chasing the milestone. The Vantage Black Sticks dominated possession and territory early, earning several penalty corners in the opening quarter. Japan's goalkeeper initially denied Russell on multiple occasions, producing some outstanding saves to keep the scores level.
But with just over a minute remaining in the quarter, Russell finally got his moment.
Stepping up to another penalty corner, he unleashed a trademark drag flick that was too fast and too accurate for the goalkeeper or defenders to stop. Kane Russell has officially reached 100 international goals in 222 matches for the Vantage Black Sticks.
An incredible milestone for one of New Zealand hockey's greatest players.
And he wasn't finished there.
The Vantage Black Sticks continued to control the game in the second quarter, creating the majority of the chances and keeping Japan pinned in their own half. Late in the quarter, Russell won a penalty stroke and calmly converted to double New Zealand's lead and move to 101 international goals.
Then, with just two seconds remaining before halftime, Isaac Houlbrooke produced a moment of magic. He weaved past multiple Japanese defenders before slipping the ball into the circle for Scott Boyde, who finished the move clinically to send the Vantage Black Sticks into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.
The third quarter saw New Zealand extend their advantage further. A penalty corner breakdown fell kindly to Sam Lane, who showed great touch to guide the ball past the Japanese goalkeeper and make it 4-0. Japan managed to get on the scoreboard shortly after through a penalty stroke, reducing the deficit to 4-1 heading into the final quarter.
Japan came out with renewed energy in the last 15 minutes and began creating more attacking opportunities. Goalkeeper Dom Dixon was outstanding, producing several sharp reflex saves to keep New Zealand comfortably ahead.
Japan did manage to score one more field goal, but the Vantage Black Sticks had the final say.
Scott Boyde capped off a brilliant evening by scoring his second goal of the match, sealing a 5-2 victory and ensuring New Zealand completed pool play with four wins from four matches.
The result confirms the Vantage Black Sticks Men finish top of Pool A on 12 points and will now face hosts South Africa in the semi-final at 2:45am NZT on 20 June.
Playing the home nation in front of a packed Cape Town crowd promises to be one of the biggest challenges of the tournament and one hockey fans won't want to miss.
But before all eyes turn to the semi-finals, it is worth celebrating Kane Russell once more. One hundred international goals in 222 matches is an extraordinary achievement and another chapter in an already remarkable career in the black shirt.
